Chandra Krishnamoorthy has been appointed as the first woman Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry Central University. She has succeeded JAK Tareen who demitted office, who was holding the post for a little over five years.
Krishnamoorthy is the sixth Vice Chancellor of the University which was established through an Act of Parliament in 1985. She was earlier the VC of National Law University in Orissa and is a doctorate in Law.
Pondicherry University, a central university, is a collegiate university with a jurisdiction spread over the Union Territories of Pondicherry, Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It has 35000 students in its 87 affiliated colleges including 27,000 students in the distance education mode. It has introduced innovations like the Choice-based Credit System and on-line admission for postgraduate studies.
